Welcome to Lingonomics!

Lingonomics is about language and business. I'm Nathan, the person behind the site, and my goal is to explore the various ways linguistics interacts with the professional world. If you'd like to learn more, you can find more details on the About page.

How Lingonomics is organized

To help you find what you're looking for, content on Lingonomics is organized into a few key areas:

  • Lexicon: This is the foundational knowledge base. These articles explain key linguistic concepts used across Field Notes and Case Studies. Whenever a key concept is used in an article, I'll link to an explanation here for deeper understanding.
  • Field Notes: These are observational, real-world snapshots of linguistics in action. These articles are applicable across a wide variety of industries and broad enough to encounter examples in everyday life.
  • Case Studies: These are deeper analyses of how specific companies and industries leverage linguistic concepts into powerful components of their business strategies.

Beyond articles, Lingonomics has a Name Map, which explores and dissects the history and linguistic details behind business names.

Don't know where to start?

Here are some of my favorite pieces to help you get started:

  • Field Notes - The "Financial" Split: Discusses when and why some people say fine-ance while others say fin-ance.
  • Case Studies - Round1's Linguistic Commodification: An analysis of how an arcade chain leverages Japan's cultural popularity.
  • Name map: Explore an interactive map and learn more about popular business names.
